Susana Gonzalez received assistance through the Vernon-Central / LATTC WorkSource Center and now gets to pay it forward.

Meet Susana. Susana Gonzalez came across the services provided at the Vernon-Central / LATTC WorkSource Center mid- January 2019. Susana is a bilingual Adult participant who was seeking employment related to her Bachelor’s degree completed in Social Welfare and Disabilities Studies in December 2018. Susana enrolled in the WorkSource Center and was assigned to All Peoples Career Coach Mario Calderon. After enrollment, Intake Specialist Lourdes Gomez reviewed Susana’s expansive involvement with her community and assisted her with a lead to a job fair recruiting case managers. Immediately after orientation, Susana attended the recruitment event.

Shortly thereafter, Susana was offered a Client Services Coordinator position at The Chrysalis Center. She then agreed to the full time employment offer and is now assisting others in the same position she was in when she first began seeking employment by developing their interviewing skills and resumes to attain employment. Susana is a great example of using the resources available in her community to network and gain skills necessary to attain employment. As many students coming out of college may understand, finding work immediately after graduation can be a challenging and daunting task. However, Susana quickly used her resources and established strong connections in order to better her chances of employment.

The WorkSource Center is proud to have assisted Susana in both her endeavors of helping others in her community as well as achieving financial stability in an industry that is both fulfilling and related to her field of interest. Susana is now actively working with Career Coach, Mario Calderon, in an effort to continue her involvement with her community by empowering the under-served youth of the Greater Los Angeles area to follow in her footsteps in using the resources available to them to better their future.

WorkSource Center Career Coach Mario Calderon

Mario currently holds weekly WorkSource Recruitment Readiness Workshops, Interview Technique Workshops and Job Fairs to give clients an opportunity meet employers with opportunities in various fields.

If you’re 18 or over, please contact Mario at (213) 763-5961 or mcalderon@allpeoplescc.org for more information regarding the services available.

An external audit is also completed once a year.

I am proud to announce the brand new “Fiscal Responsibility” addition to the All Peoples website. This is another important step to protect the long-term health of our organization. Corporate sponsors, foundations and individual donors will now be able to review our audited financial statements and 990 tax forms here.

Thank you for entrusting us to proudly serve our South Los Angeles Community with Real Solutions, Real Heart, and Real Service.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Huerta has received permanent residency, a driver’s license, and assistance for her autistic son.

Meet Mrs. Huerta. Mrs. Huerta is a 51 year old female who lives with her husband and her 13 year old child. In the summer of 2017, she came to All Peoples to inquire about services for herself and her son. She inquired about our computer classes and ESL program and immediately participated in both. Through the intake process, a FamilySource Center intake specialist found out that her 13 year old son was autistic and could benefit from case management services.

Through the case management assessment, FamilySource Case Manager Yessenia Villacorta discovered that Mrs. Huerta had already submitted an application to immigration services on her own and was awaiting a response. She was however, in need of assistance with Regional Center advocacy and legal and immigration services information. When setting up an action plan with her case manager, Mrs. Huerta asked for help with translation services for an upcoming IEP meeting at her son’s school as well as translation services at the immigration office. Mrs. Huerta also requested advocacy at the regional center and at her son’s school.

Mrs. Huerta’s case manager accompanied her to the IEP meeting at John Adams Middle School and to the immigration office where she received the good news that her application for permanent residency was approved. Mrs. Huerta did not have a Driver’s License before, but with the documentation of approval and an Alien Identification Number, she could apply for a DMV license. With the assistance of her case manager, Mrs. Huerta found a driving school and completed the driver’s license application. The case manager was also able to drive her to take the driving test. Mrs. Huerta passed the driving test, and is now a licensed driver. Last month, she received her permanent residency card from immigration services.

Mrs. Huerta is actively participating and receiving services at our center. She has participated in the ESL class, computer class, supplementary food program, and Christmas program. She also filed her taxes through our VITA program and participated in the Christmas program.

Because of Mrs. Huerta’s tenacity and with the advocacy provided by her FamilySource Case Manager, Mrs. Huerta is on the path of creating a better life for herself and her family.

“Banking for Seniors” Program

All Peoples Community Center has been awarded a Capital One Grant for a new Senior Financial Literacy Program.

The “Banking for Seniors” Program is designed to address the need of increasing on-line banking experience for the elderly. With the increase of technology, there has been changes in how the elderly receive social security, retirement or annuity income. There has also been changes with options to pay bills on-line or receive payments from family members through PayPal etc. In addition, many business have shifted to on-line purchases. Often our elderly have not transitioned into this new phase. On-line banking may enhance security such as stolen checks etc., but it also has the potential for abuse through scams and lack of knowledge of security protocols. Our program is designed to reach those persons who have not utilized on-line banking or with limited knowledge of its potential to improve their banking options.

“Banking for Seniors” will be available for persons 55 years and older to participate in a 4-week program facilitated by Capital One staff entitled “Ready Set Bank”. The session will be 1 hour per week and after each session, participants will have the opportunity to go to computer lab for 1 hour of hands on experience and practice. We anticipate an overall increase in the use of on-line banking, opening accounts, bill pay and review of bank products for seniors in our South LA Community. At the completion of the series, individuals will be referred for financial coaching or literacy classes offered by All Peoples Community Center.

Thank you to Capital One and their Team for this exciting collaboration! Please be on the look out for more information regarding this exciting new All Peoples program and how you can become involved!

Thank you to Madis Limeta, Joab Mekonnen, and all Capital One volunteers for helping to remodel our After-School TEENS Program room!

We truly appreciate your support!

Paulina with her Newborn

All Peoples Program Facilitator Aracely Corona shares a moment from our All Peoples Supplemental Food Program:

Meet Paulina.  Paulina is a 35 year old Latina women with three children. She walked into our supplemental food program with her new born daughter in her hands. She was accompanied by her sister. Paulina sat down at our intake table expressing that she needed emergency food since her husband had recently been laid off. As staff listened to her story, it was evident that she was also in need of a stroller. All Peoples had recently received a pallet of children’s items earlier that week through the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. In that donation, there was a stroller that also came with a car seat that fortunately was still available for distribution. Staff and interns worked to assemble the stroller, and when the stroller was ready, we surprised the client with the stroller. She was overjoyed with the surprise and expressed that she wanted to cry of happiness. Staff and volunteers helped Paulina in loading her bags of food into the stroller. She disclosed that her birthday had just passed and that this was a great belated birthday present. Paulina could not believe that she had received a stroller; one that she had always wanted for her baby. Paulina’s sister was also provided a bag of food. All Peoples’ staff and volunteers in the supplemental food program that day were humbled by the gratitude that was expressed by Paulina.

All Peoples Supplemental Food Program continues to seek an increase in donations to be able to support families in need of assistance from our Food Program as well as other Programs offered at All Peoples.
