The Pico Robinson Lions’ Club was introduced to All Peoples in 1947. A lady from Wilshire Christian Church approached Bob Brunner, President, of the Lion’s to purchase a tricycle for the daycare program. She only had $5.00. Big hearted Bob Brunner heard the story and decided to give her the tricycle, two wagons and a Christmas tree for the children at All Peoples.  This was the beginning of the relationship between the Pico Robertson Lions Club and All Peoples.

In 1959, Bob wrote “For 11 years with Lions my happiest assignment was Chairman of the All Peoples activities. Starting with the wagon donation each year our Christmas parties have grown and now we provide 395 presents, apples, oranges and candy with one of the Lions playing Santa Claus. We donated a $2,000 carry–all Station Wagon (remember the year was 1950). We assisted the children to attend Dodgers and Rams games. Finally, we are donated $650.00 for the furnishings in the daycare.” Bob further stated that “It is a feeling of great satisfaction being a Lion”.

While the Pico Robertson Lions Club no longer exist, beginning in 1987, All Peoples has been adopted by the L.A. Host Lions Club and they have continued to support our youth through the Lark Ellen Foundation. They also support our health fairs with vision screenings. Thanks to Dr. Fredy Perez and all the L.A. Host Lions.

FamilySource Center Data Intake Specialist Michelle Watson shares a note illustrating the self-determination of FSC Client Deja Snowden.

Meet Deja Snowden. Ms. Snowden, FSC participant since March 2019, originally came into All Peoples seeking emergency food. During Ms. Snowden’s intake, she brought her 2 month old son who is the motivation behind all her success. Ms. Snowden was able to effectively voice her employment, housing and educational goals.

A note from Deja Snowden: “Thanks to Data Intake Specialist Michelle Watson at All Peoples I’ve accomplished so much! I have a new sense of self-confidence, and I’ve paved my way to success. I went into the center putting others needs before the needs of me and my child. Thanks to instructions and a referral from Michelle Watson to the TSE program I now have a job training position with the County of Los Angeles, and I am ready to obtain permanent housing. I was able to complete a Financial Literacy course that helped me understand my finances, make better use of my money and credit, and increase my credit score. I was able to file my income taxes for free, and I got back so much money that I saved some to help me move out when the time is right.

All Peoples has provided me and my child with so many resources like food, clothing and diapers that I will forever be grateful. Through Michelle at All Peoples I’ve been given the tools to go back to school which is something I’ve been on the fence about for a long time. I just want to thank Michelle and everyone else who made it possible to provide the services that are the reason for the success I have today. Michelle is currently helping me find permanent housing and enroll back into school.”

Pictured left to right, FSC Client Deja N Snowden, Ms. Snowden’s son, and FSC Data Intake Specialist Michelle Watson.

In the beginning All Peoples established youth clubs. It was an opportunity for team building, leadership development, and explore beyond the neighborhood. One of the clubs is the Monarchs. The Monarchs leader is James Thomas. James grew up in the neighborhood and he and family attended the Center programs. James was a youth worker during college and eventually went on the work for the LA County Sheriff department. Since retirement James continues his community involvement. He and his partner Marc provide educational and life skills parenting classes across the county.   In maintaining his connection to All Peoples more than 30 years ago the Monarchs began meeting, reconnecting to talk about the growing up at All Peoples, stories, family, life, work and lessons learned. The group members are in their mid-60’s but the bonds established in their youth still remains.  One of the memories which they all enjoyed was going to Camp Joe Ide. They have supported All Peoples Camp scholarships every year for more than 30 years. Recently they invited Saundra “Sandy” Bryant and her husband Leo to join them for their annual dinner at Hop Lings restaurant in Chinatown.

Meet Ms. Polanco. Chantal Polanco is a 17 year old youth who was referred to All Peoples Community Center by Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD). Ms. Polanco along with her siblings and mother, Sandra Mandujano, joined All Peoples in March of 2019. She met with YouthSource Case Manager, Adrian Rios, and Los Angeles Unified School District PSA Counselor, Stacy Gooding, who found out that Ms. Polanco and her family could benefit from case management services.

Chantal was working for CRCD, hosted by All Peoples, since November 2018, and has completed her youth employment hours. Ms. Polanco inquired about youth educational services, professional enrichment, and college preparedness workshops and resources currently available at the All Peoples FamilySource Center. She participated in the two-week financial literacy classes and became an After School Program Leader.

Through the case management assessment, FamilySource Case Manager Yessenia Villacorta discovered that Ms. Polanco needed housing assistance, employment advocacy, educational support including senior extra-curricular activities, and post-secondary education assistance. She graduated from John C. Freemont High School on June 6, 2019. Case Manager Yessenia Villacorta attended Ms. Polanco’s graduation to congratulate her on meeting her goal of obtaining a high school diploma. Because of Ms. Polanco’s determination and with the advocacy provided by her FamilySource Case Manager, Ms. Polanco is on track of enrolling into college to become a Therapist.
