Meet Miguel. Miguel Angel Romero Cruz is a 17 year old YouthSource Participant who credits his close knit family (Mom, Dad, and siblings) for setting a strong example of resiliency, cooperation, support, organization, leadership, and teamwork. Miguel sees and understands the harsh struggles his parents face on a daily basis, and it’s his parents that inspire him every day with their display of resiliency from the strength of his father to work countless nights to his mother raising him and his siblings. He’s also grateful for his siblings who have mentored him and offered academic tutoring throughout his childhood.

Because of family support and Miguel’s hard work, he’s been able to achieve all A’s since 9th grade to his culmination in June 2019 from Thomas Jefferson High School. On his high school diploma, there are three seals that bear the fruition of hard work, commitment, family support, prioritization, attitude, and goal-orientation. Miguel was the Class Valedictorian of Thomas Jefferson High School and feels that his success is his families as well. Miguel’s LAUSD official grade point average since his early years to his graduation was 4.3. Miguel appreciates all of his teachers at Thomas Jefferson High School that taught him that barriers are not meant to be an excuse to give up, but are meant to be surpassed.

Miguel is currently working at a summer paid internship with BuroHappold Engineering and Consulting Co as a MEP (Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical) Intern with diverse roles; modeling mechanical equipment, rerouting pipework as well as ductwork on floorplans, viewing and managing floor plans, and exploring sustainability and data input. As part of Miguel’s role in BuroHappold, he takes in data from client buildings to assess the level of indoor quality of a building’s air and utilities as well as the thermal comfort of its occupants. The portfolio of projects he has worked on include a number of universities, museums, and office spaces located in California among other states as well. Miguel loves working as an intern at BuroHappold, and has developed great relationships with his Supervisors and Administrators which he now considered mentors: Ms. Kathleen Hetrick, Ms. Sara Kingman, Mr. Lucas Lieberman, and Ms. Lorena De La Cruz. Miguel hopes to pursue a career in the engineering or STEM field, and with Miguel’s natural determination, he’s well on his way.

All Peoples is proud to announce and grateful for the generous support of Women Helping Youth (W.H.Y.) who provided the funding for our new computer lab. W.H.Y. is a women’s philanthropic organization committed to improving the physical, mental and emotional well-being of children and youth adults in need in the Los Angeles area by combining individual donations to create a larger pool of funds with which to make a difference in the lives of youth.

The newly upgraded computer lab will provide more learning classes for youth and families and allow youth better access to research for homework, school projects, online services, continuing education programs, college admissions, and job search. We would like to thank W.H.Y. for their support and for this opportunity to bring more services to our youth, families and community.

In addition to computer lab, members of W.H.Y. continue to be active contributors to the Center. We would like to acknowledge and thank Gisela Friedman for her donation of clothing for our youth to help prepare them for jobs interviews as they enter the work field. We appreciate you and your organization’s support.

FamilySource Center Data Intake Specialist Michelle Watson shares a note illustrating the self-determination of FSC Client Deja Snowden.

Meet Deja Snowden. Ms. Snowden, FSC participant since March 2019, originally came into All Peoples seeking emergency food. During Ms. Snowden’s intake, she brought her 2 month old son who is the motivation behind all her success. Ms. Snowden was able to effectively voice her employment, housing and educational goals.

A note from Deja Snowden: “Thanks to Data Intake Specialist Michelle Watson at All Peoples I’ve accomplished so much! I have a new sense of self-confidence, and I’ve paved my way to success. I went into the center putting others needs before the needs of me and my child. Thanks to instructions and a referral from Michelle Watson to the TSE program I now have a job training position with the County of Los Angeles, and I am ready to obtain permanent housing. I was able to complete a Financial Literacy course that helped me understand my finances, make better use of my money and credit, and increase my credit score. I was able to file my income taxes for free, and I got back so much money that I saved some to help me move out when the time is right.

All Peoples has provided me and my child with so many resources like food, clothing and diapers that I will forever be grateful. Through Michelle at All Peoples I’ve been given the tools to go back to school which is something I’ve been on the fence about for a long time. I just want to thank Michelle and everyone else who made it possible to provide the services that are the reason for the success I have today. Michelle is currently helping me find permanent housing and enroll back into school.”

Sabrina Pridgett has overcome incredible odds to successfully graduate high school and attend college this Fall.

Meet Sabrina. Sabrina Pridgett is a 20 year old YouthSource Participant who is the definition of resiliency. She comes from a four member household learning to deal with income instability, lack of academic guidance, and family loss which she has used to build strength to push herself daily. Sabrina Pridgett finished a milestone in her academic goals by completing high school in December 2018 and receiving her diploma from CRCD Academy at All Peoples where she was taking Independent Studies. She sees graduating from CRCD as the first step in the right direction and positioning herself for “the overcoming of future obstacles”.

Sabrina is approaching her one year anniversary as a YouthSource Participant. During her intake process, Sabrina met with YouthSource Assistant Ms. Michelle Watson who instantly recognized her potential for academic success. She is a natural leader and mentor for the rest of her peer group at YouthSource. Through YouthSource, Sabrina has participated in civic engagement such as homeless outreach, community events, and youth lead.

Pictured, YouthSource Participants at Santa Monica College

Sabrina worked her youth internship hours as an Clerical Assistant at All Peoples where she has been a tremendous help with data input and organizing files among other responsibilities. Her next goal is pursuing her undergraduate studies at Santa Monica College. Sabrina fell in love with photography from the first moment she remembers picking up a camera and wants to pursue it professionally. Another passion Sabrina has is cosmetology. She would like to blend both interests into a personal business.

In February 2019, Sabrina completed a Santa Monica College tour with YouthSource Case Manager Adrian Rios, and visited the Cosmetology and Photography department buildings to get familiarized with the campus. They returned in May to meet with academic counselors to put together an action plan for college starting with signing up for Fall classes. Sabrina looks forward to joining the Black Collegians at SMC and remaining active in the pursuit of her personal and community’s success.

This is just the beginning for Sabrina. In five years, she would like to be living independently in her own apartment and continuing her education. Sabrina hopes to one day own her own Photography Studio. For Sabrina, there is no obstacle she can’t overcome with self-determination and seeking out the right resources. She believes that community is the essence of unity and that coming together is what will help the world become a better place. A community motto she strongly believes in is “You have to understand something to make an effective change”.

Kevin Aguilar will be the first in his family to graduate high school and go to college.

Meet Kevin. Kevin Aguilar is a seventeen year old high school student at NAVA Preparatory College Academy. He currently has a GPA of 3.3, and his favorite subject is Pre-Calculus. His hobbies include composing and writing music and photography.

Kevin grew up in a large family with strong values of work ethic, respect, hard work, determination, and a sense of self (knowing who you are). He believes that education helps broaden people’s perspectives and experience. Kevin also gives thanks to mentors like his cousin Brian that take time to guide and assist youth because in Kevin’s words, “it’s not easy living in rough neighborhoods”.

Kevin first joined All Peoples in November 2018 when he participated in our Toyota Scholarship Workshop provided through FamilySource College Corner. From there, Kevin enrolled into the YouthSource Center to get post-secondary transitional and employment support services. He is currently in the process of completing his work internship with YouthSource as an Academic Tutor at the All Peoples after-school program. Kevin stands out as a “natural leader” in the after-school program. He has strong mentor skills and sees all the youth as younger siblings.

Kevin has also contributed immensely to our South Los Angeles Vernon-Central community. He volunteers his time during All Peoples’ community events such as our Annual Christmas Event. Kevin has also joined All Peoples’ collaborative partner Los Angeles Community Action Team – LACAT and actively assists in community clean ups as well as homeless outreach.

Kevin’s goals are to attend Santa Monica College and then transfer to UCLA. He would like to major in Marketing/Advertisement or Computer Science with a minor in Music. YouthSource Case Manager Adrian Rios has started working with Kevin in the college enrollment process.

Facing family challenges and overcoming hard obstacles in life has made Kevin a resilient youth. Kevin enjoys time spent at All Peoples because he “loves the family environment”. He hopes to continue to be an example to and mentor his younger siblings by encouraging them to strive to go to college. Because of Kevin’s resiliency and with the support of his YS Case Manager Adrian Rios, Kevin will be the first to graduate and go to college in his family.
