The All Peoples 22nd Annual Health, Resource and Book Fair was held on Saturday, June 1, 2019. Community members were able to receive free vision exams, mammograms, oral health presentations, glucose and blood pressure screenings, free reading glasses to children under 18 with vision deficiencies, pedestrian and bicycle safety presentations, dental screenings and Scholastic 2 for 1 books.

The LA Host Lions conducted the vision screening at All Peoples from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. They screened a total of 105 people of which there were 69 adults and 36 children. Of those screened 32 adults received reading eyeglasses, 35 passed and 38, mostly children, were referred for further evaluation under our Lark Ellen grant to the Southern California College of Optometry. All Peoples would like to thank the LA Host Lions for conducting the vision screening during the fair.

All Peoples would also like to thank our Sponsors who helped to make the event possible: Simply Ink, 2120 Kuts, Marquez Meats, El Panon Bakery, Lucia’s Discount Store, Guadalupana Bakery, GS Mart, M.E.J.O.R. Group, World Harvest Food Bank, Clemente Gutierrez, and Ricardo Macias. We appreciate your support, and on behalf of our staff and event attendees, thank you for helping to empower our community.

Meet Ms. Polanco. Chantal Polanco is a 17 year old youth who was referred to All Peoples Community Center by Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD). Ms. Polanco along with her siblings and mother, Sandra Mandujano, joined All Peoples in March of 2019. She met with YouthSource Case Manager, Adrian Rios, and Los Angeles Unified School District PSA Counselor, Stacy Gooding, who found out that Ms. Polanco and her family could benefit from case management services.

Chantal was working for CRCD, hosted by All Peoples, since November 2018, and has completed her youth employment hours. Ms. Polanco inquired about youth educational services, professional enrichment, and college preparedness workshops and resources currently available at the All Peoples FamilySource Center. She participated in the two-week financial literacy classes and became an After School Program Leader.

Through the case management assessment, FamilySource Case Manager Yessenia Villacorta discovered that Ms. Polanco needed housing assistance, employment advocacy, educational support including senior extra-curricular activities, and post-secondary education assistance. She graduated from John C. Freemont High School on June 6, 2019. Case Manager Yessenia Villacorta attended Ms. Polanco’s graduation to congratulate her on meeting her goal of obtaining a high school diploma. Because of Ms. Polanco’s determination and with the advocacy provided by her FamilySource Case Manager, Ms. Polanco is on track of enrolling into college to become a Therapist.

FamilySource Center services are available at All Peoples Community Center year-around. Please contact Yessenia at (213) 747-6357 Ext. 129 or yvillacorta@allpeoplescc.org for more information regarding the services available.

A Message from our Executive Director Saundra Bryant:

The All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow’s Leaders” Program currently serves approximately 279 students ranging from 1st – 12th grade. Services are offered onsite at All Peoples as well as Dunbar Village, Adams and Central, Casa Figueroa and Washington 702. All program locations operate Monday through Friday from 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm.

The structure of our All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow’s Leaders” Program allows ample time throughout the week for healthy snacks, academic assistance, recreational activities, and social development. Student performance throughout the year is monitored by collecting report cards and giving students a pre and post-test in math and reading using the STAR assessment program.

Based on reports, 67.5% of our students showed an increase in their reading level by minimum of a full point and 23.7% of the students maintained the same reading level. In math, 77.6% of our students showed an increase in their math level and 15.7% maintained the same math level. Staff’s main focus is to consistently work with students to improve in the areas in which they are lacking academically. Staff maintains a constant and close relationship with the school, teachers, and parents in order to help improve the student’s academic performance.

For 2019, we will start highlighting our All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow Leaders” Program by featuring a “Youth of the Month” on our website. The Youth recognized for the Month will showcase their experience in the All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow’s Leaders” Program by posting pictures and stories on our All Peoples Instagram Page using hashtag #TomorrowsLeaders. We encourage you to support our Youth by following them on Instagram as we empower them to be the change that they want to see in their schools and community.

Geraldine Morgan celebrated her 99th birthday April 18th. Geri grew up in South Los Angeles and has been a member of All Peoples more than seventy years. Geri was a RSVP volunteer and served as secretary of the RSVP advisory council. When a new program was established called “Rolling Readers” Geri was one of the first to sign up. Volunteers were assigned to local elementary schools to read to the youth. The youth at 49th street school really got a kick in finding out Geri had attended the school as a child.

Geri was an active member of All Peoples Christian Church. She worked with the Christian Fellowship group which sponsored camperships for Joe Ide camp for many years.

After the CF group disbanded, Geri took up the mantle and started what became known as the country store. Every second Sunday she would bake cookies and sell secondhand items. All the funds collected would go to support the “Joe Ide Camp”. Thousands of youth experienced the great outdoors due to the commitment of Geri that no child would miss the opportunity to experience a life transforming event because of their family’s ability to pay.

Geri relocated to Alabama and lives with her daughter Barbara and son-in-law Art. She travels and is Nana to the great grandchildren. She has never forgotten her commitment to All Peoples and continues her monthly support.

All Peoples believes that education is a key to improving the quality of life for our youth and their families. We demonstrate our support by assisting young people in College Corner and Tomorrow’s Leaders programs. We have established a scholarship fund with support from our donors and “Giving Tuesday” campaign. In honor of her commitment and a befitting birthday gift for 99 years of a truly remarkable life, generous and beautiful spirit we have named the scholarship fund “Geri Morgan”. Geri was in Los Angeles this past week and was recognized at All Peoples Church on Sunday.  Thank you, Geri, for your support and belief that all youth deserve the opportunity to excel and they will be successful if given a chance.
