The following young women were nominated by Stacy Gooding, Pupil Services and Attendance (PSA) Counselor, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and Adrian Rios, Youth Source Case Manager, All Peoples Community FamilySource Center to participate in The Assistance League Los Angeles’ Annual Operation School Bell Prom Dress Event:

Dear Friends of All Peoples,

All Peoples is a trusted safe space in South LA Vernon-Central (zip code 90011) for youth and families. We extend use of our playground area to our families and community members to gather and enjoy the outdoors.

Many know that there is a concern about safety with reported gang activities in the area.  The closest public playground for children to play is at Trinity Park which is about 1 mile away. Due to these safety concerns, Youth in our neighborhood are unable to participate in most neighborhood and family activities (i.e. trick or treating).

Our All Peoples playground area is fenced in, and we welcome youth and families to take advantage of the safe space year-round. Approximately 306 Youth use our play equipment per day including All Peoples Preschool, After-school and tutoring programs, Summer Day Camp, DCSF Participants and Youth registered in the South Central Sports League. Due to the extended use, our playground has been in dire need of repair and upgrades.

We are grateful to announce that Warner Music Group, in partnership with KaBOOM!, has agreed to sponsor a brand new playground for our All Peoples Youth and our South LA Vernon-Central Community, and we need your help to bring this new playground to our youth and families.

Volunteers will be needed on Tuesday, June 18th and Thursday, June 20th to help build the new All Peoples playground, and we hope that you can join us to help bring a great new play space for our Youth. Below you will find more information and instructions on how to sign up as a volunteer.

We are grateful for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you in June to help create this brand new play space for our community.

Sincerely,

Saundra Bryant

Executive Director

Kevin Aguilar will be the first in his family to graduate high school and go to college.

Meet Kevin. Kevin Aguilar is a seventeen year old high school student at NAVA Preparatory College Academy. He currently has a GPA of 3.3, and his favorite subject is Pre-Calculus. His hobbies include composing and writing music and photography.

Kevin grew up in a large family with strong values of work ethic, respect, hard work, determination, and a sense of self (knowing who you are). He believes that education helps broaden people’s perspectives and experience. Kevin also gives thanks to mentors like his cousin Brian that take time to guide and assist youth because in Kevin’s words, “it’s not easy living in rough neighborhoods”.

Kevin first joined All Peoples in November 2018 when he participated in our Toyota Scholarship Workshop provided through FamilySource College Corner. From there, Kevin enrolled into the YouthSource Center to get post-secondary transitional and employment support services. He is currently in the process of completing his work internship with YouthSource as an Academic Tutor at the All Peoples after-school program. Kevin stands out as a “natural leader” in the after-school program. He has strong mentor skills and sees all the youth as younger siblings.

Kevin has also contributed immensely to our South Los Angeles Vernon-Central community. He volunteers his time during All Peoples’ community events such as our Annual Christmas Event. Kevin has also joined All Peoples’ collaborative partner Los Angeles Community Action Team – LACAT and actively assists in community clean ups as well as homeless outreach.

Kevin’s goals are to attend Santa Monica College and then transfer to UCLA. He would like to major in Marketing/Advertisement or Computer Science with a minor in Music. YouthSource Case Manager Adrian Rios has started working with Kevin in the college enrollment process.

Facing family challenges and overcoming hard obstacles in life has made Kevin a resilient youth. Kevin enjoys time spent at All Peoples because he “loves the family environment”. He hopes to continue to be an example to and mentor his younger siblings by encouraging them to strive to go to college. Because of Kevin’s resiliency and with the support of his YS Case Manager Adrian Rios, Kevin will be the first to graduate and go to college in his family.

Youth Programs are available at All Peoples Community Center year-around. Please contact Rios at (213) 747-6357 Ext. 151 or arios@allpeoplescc.org for more information regarding the services available.

A Message from our Executive Director Saundra Bryant:

The All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow’s Leaders” Program currently serves approximately 279 students ranging from 1st – 12th grade. Services are offered onsite at All Peoples as well as Dunbar Village, Adams and Central, Casa Figueroa and Washington 702. All program locations operate Monday through Friday from 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm.

The structure of our All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow’s Leaders” Program allows ample time throughout the week for healthy snacks, academic assistance, recreational activities, and social development. Student performance throughout the year is monitored by collecting report cards and giving students a pre and post-test in math and reading using the STAR assessment program.

Based on reports, 67.5% of our students showed an increase in their reading level by minimum of a full point and 23.7% of the students maintained the same reading level. In math, 77.6% of our students showed an increase in their math level and 15.7% maintained the same math level. Staff’s main focus is to consistently work with students to improve in the areas in which they are lacking academically. Staff maintains a constant and close relationship with the school, teachers, and parents in order to help improve the student’s academic performance.

For 2019, we will start highlighting our All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow Leaders” Program by featuring a “Youth of the Month” on our website. The Youth recognized for the Month will showcase their experience in the All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow’s Leaders” Program by posting pictures and stories on our All Peoples Instagram Page using hashtag #TomorrowsLeaders. We encourage you to support our Youth by following them on Instagram as we empower them to be the change that they want to see in their schools and community.

On February 24, 1947, Former President Ronald Reagan (pictured Center) was a guest speaker at our All Peoples Annual Bread and Water Banquet. As President Reagan spoke about the idea of “Americanism”, two slices of bread and cups of water were served for Dinner as reminder of all that we have to be thankful for. Ronald Reagan was a famous actor in Hollywood and had been invited to speak.

In 1950, Former President Reagan (shown below) returned to All Peoples to show support of our All Peoples girl youth group called Ebonaries. This girls group was developed to empower young women with leadership development skills. The girls were inspired by his encouragement.
