All Peoples Juniors Volleyball Team is being honored as our All Peoples June Youth of the Month!

“Being able to coach this team is such a privilege. I am able to not only see them grow as a team, but as individuals. Most of them started off being shy and scared to play volleyball. As the practices went on, you can see the exact moment they gained the courage and confidence to play. They always try their hardest and always have fun playing. And of course that is the best thing a coach can hope for.” ~ Davida Rosado, All Peoples Juniors Volleyball Coach

A Message from our Executive Director Saundra Bryant:

The All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow’s Leaders” Program currently serves approximately 279 students ranging from 1st – 12th grade. Services are offered onsite at All Peoples as well as Dunbar Village, Adams and Central, Casa Figueroa and Washington 702. All program locations operate Monday through Friday from 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm.

The structure of our All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow’s Leaders” Program allows ample time throughout the week for healthy snacks, academic assistance, recreational activities, and social development. Student performance throughout the year is monitored by collecting report cards and giving students a pre and post-test in math and reading using the STAR assessment program.

Based on reports, 67.5% of our students showed an increase in their reading level by minimum of a full point and 23.7% of the students maintained the same reading level. In math, 77.6% of our students showed an increase in their math level and 15.7% maintained the same math level. Staff’s main focus is to consistently work with students to improve in the areas in which they are lacking academically. Staff maintains a constant and close relationship with the school, teachers, and parents in order to help improve the student’s academic performance.

For 2019, we will start highlighting our All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow Leaders” Program by featuring a “Youth of the Month” on our website. The Youth recognized for the Month will showcase their experience in the All Peoples After-School “Tomorrow’s Leaders” Program by posting pictures and stories on our All Peoples Instagram Page using hashtag #TomorrowsLeaders. We encourage you to support our Youth by following them on Instagram as we empower them to be the change that they want to see in their schools and community.

Camp Joe Ide and Denton Roberts Family camp are held at Loch Leven Camp and Conference Center in Mentone California. On Saturday April 13, 2019 we took a group of youth up to Loch Leven to a farewell celebration for Sloan Hamilton, Operations Manager. Sloan served in this capacity for 8 years and enjoyed a special relationship with All Peoples counselors and campers. All Peoples was represented by staff and past campers. Upon arrival we were able to explore the camp on our own while we waited for the celebration to start. Some of the youth were able to participate in tree climbing. They climbed a tree named Mr. Majestic that was about 100 ft. tall. After the youth finished climbing, everyone gathered for a delicious meal. During the meal everyone had a chance to interact with each other. We met people from other camps and organizations. The youth and adult were able to write personal affirmations to Sloan as a going away gift.  Don and Susan Dewey recognized Sloan for all the hard work that she and her husband Joseph have put into camp.

During the ceremony, Sloan, dedicated a memorial garden sponsored by Burch family. She also dedicated the area around Mr. Majestic where the youth climbed to volunteer Tom Reed who has helped make trails all over the camp. Tom Reed is a former All Peoples Board member. We wish Sloan and Joseph the best in their new endeavors.

Let’s get to know Susana Nieva, All Peoples Community Center’s College Advisor:

Favorite Food: Tacos

Favorite Color: Purple

Favorite Animal: Dogs

Favorite Quote: “Whoever corrects the wicked incurs abuse. Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise, and they will love you. Instruct the wise and they will be still wiser; teach the righteous, and they will increase their learning.”

How would you describe All Peoples Community Center: I would describe All Peoples Community Center as the cornerstone of the South LA Community where the Community is welcome to come to make a positive difference in their lives, their families, and others. Our members are encouraged by staff to innovate themselves by starting a new career, going back to school, and contribute in the work force by ensuring employment along with many other resources.

Favorite Part of Your Job: My favorite part of my job is when I get to talk to families about opportunities for their children. They show appreciation knowing that they are not alone and that their children’s future is in their hands. I also enjoy listening to high school student’s talk about their plans in regards to their education. I humbly look up to them because most of them are first generation college applicants, and on top of that, our students come from economically deprived homes. Thus, it is a huge commitment to continue their education. They are doing it!

My best All Peoples story: My best All Peoples story is from a few months after joining All Peoples’ College Corner department. A college student came in distressed in regards to financial aid previous year disbursement. The student had an outstanding balance, therefore, was not allowed to add classes. He had done what he could in terms of financial aid tasks, but the college financial aid office was not helping him solve the issue; they were telling him that in order to add classes he had to pay out of pocket. I accompanied the student to the financial aid office, and spoke to the financial aid representative. The financial aid representative instantly uplifted the fees therefore, immediately allowing the student to add classes. The best part of this story was that the student was able to continue with his educational journey, moving one-step further to getting his degree.

Hobbies: I like to watch YouTube videos. I also enjoy looking at nature and writing.

Fun Fact About Me/Hidden Talent: I love to write in my journal about lessons I’ve learned throughout my day and life with the purpose that I will never forget, and that I will practice them.

Me in 3 Words: Ambitious, Passionate, and Kind

We’re so happy that Susana is part of our All Peoples Family!

Dear Friends of All Peoples,

All Peoples is a trusted safe space in South LA Vernon-Central (zip code 90011) for youth and families. We extend use of our playground area to our families and community members to gather and enjoy the outdoors.

Many know that there is a concern about safety with reported gang activities in the area.  The closest public playground for children to play is at Trinity Park which is about 1 mile away. Due to these safety concerns, Youth in our neighborhood are unable to participate in most neighborhood and family activities (i.e. trick or treating).

Our All Peoples playground area is fenced in, and we welcome youth and families to take advantage of the safe space year-round. Approximately 306 Youth use our play equipment per day including All Peoples Preschool, After-school and tutoring programs, Summer Day Camp, DCSF Participants and Youth registered in the South Central Sports League. Due to the extended use, our playground has been in dire need of repair and upgrades.

We are grateful to announce that Warner Music Group, in partnership with KaBOOM!, has agreed to sponsor a brand new playground for our All Peoples Youth and our South LA Vernon-Central Community, and we need your help to bring this new playground to our youth and families.

Volunteers will be needed on Tuesday, June 18th and Thursday, June 20th to help build the new All Peoples playground, and we hope that you can join us to help bring a great new play space for our Youth. Below you will find more information and instructions on how to sign up as a volunteer.

We are grateful for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you in June to help create this brand new play space for our community.

Sincerely,

Saundra Bryant

Executive Director
