“Banking for Seniors” Program

All Peoples Community Center has been awarded a Capital One Grant for a new Senior Financial Literacy Program.

The “Banking for Seniors” Program is designed to address the need of increasing on-line banking experience for the elderly. With the increase of technology, there has been changes in how the elderly receive social security, retirement or annuity income. There has also been changes with options to pay bills on-line or receive payments from family members through PayPal etc. In addition, many business have shifted to on-line purchases. Often our elderly have not transitioned into this new phase. On-line banking may enhance security such as stolen checks etc., but it also has the potential for abuse through scams and lack of knowledge of security protocols. Our program is designed to reach those persons who have not utilized on-line banking or with limited knowledge of its potential to improve their banking options.

“Banking for Seniors” will be available for persons 55 years and older to participate in a 4-week program facilitated by Capital One staff entitled “Ready Set Bank”. The session will be 1 hour per week and after each session, participants will have the opportunity to go to computer lab for 1 hour of hands on experience and practice. We anticipate an overall increase in the use of on-line banking, opening accounts, bill pay and review of bank products for seniors in our South LA Community. At the completion of the series, individuals will be referred for financial coaching or literacy classes offered by All Peoples Community Center.

Thank you to Capital One and their Team for this exciting collaboration! Please be on the look out for more information regarding this exciting new All Peoples program and how you can become involved!

After-School TEENS Program Makeover!

In December 2018, Capital One Volunteers also assisted with the remodeling our After-School TEENS Program room!* **

Thank you to Madis Limeta, Joab Mekonnen, and all Capital One volunteers for helping to remodel our After-School TEENS Program room!

We truly appreciate your support!

All Peoples – Meet Our Team – Hilda Morales

Let’s get to know Hilda Morales, All Peoples Community Center’s Case Manager:

(Hilda, above pictured Center)

Favorite Food: Korean BBQ

Favorite Color: Purple

Favorite Sports Team: Dodgers

Favorite Animal: Elephants

Favorite Quote: ”It is not enough to be compassionate. You must act.”

How would you describe All Peoples Community Center: APCC is a hidden gem. I have never seen a community center with so many services and resources for clients. It’s a place with a lot of history and people who remember coming here as kids and bringing their children to experience the same services. All Peoples is all about the clients and I personally love to work with the community that make the center what is.

Favorite Part of Your Job: My favorite part of being a case manager is working with the families and finding them resources and services and helping them complete their goals; Watching my clients grow and get to place in their life where they don’t need to come see me as much because they have learned to advocate for themselves and express their needs. It is a great feeling to see my families grow and empower themselves and to know that I participate in helping them get there.

My best All Peoples story: My favorite time of the year at All Peoples are the Holidays. For our Thanksgiving event, I love watching the community get together to have a beautiful dinner together. For the Christmas event, I love to see the children we work close with get a little gift to make their holiday a bit more joyful. It’s a beautiful experience to watch a full room of community members mingle and spend happy times together. It makes my experience better to have people I serve come up to me and have a conversation with me just to say hello.

Hobbies: Spending time with my son, binge watching TV series, reading, going to Dodger games, and spending time with loved ones.

Fun Fact About Me/Hidden Talent: My favorite fun fact about me that I usually share with my clients is that I live down the street from Knott’s Berry Farm. They are always shocked about my commute, but I can always say that I love working with this community and it makes my commute worth it

Me in 3 Words: Direct, Loving, Passionate.

We’re so happy that Hilda is part of our All Peoples Family!

Real Solutions and Service to South LA

All Peoples and FamilySource Center’s College Corner Advisor Susana supports Giselle in her goals and aspirations.

Meet Giselle. Giselle is a genuine, hardworking high school student who cares about her education and love sports. In the 9th grade, Giselle led her soccer team to an undefeated season, and went on to win the Ocean League and Los Angeles City Section Championship. Giselle has been playing sports since she was 8 years and has a 4.1 GPA.

Giselle is currently attending a high school hybrid at USC, and has started contemplating her future. She stopped in All Peoples FamilySource Center’s College Corner seeking guidance regarding college admissions, academic requirements and scholarship opportunities that align with her goals and aspirations.

College Advisor Susana Nieva met with Giselle and discussed potential careers. They conducted salary, career options and college research based on Giselle’s likes and interests, and were able to pin point possible career paths: kinesiology and physical therapy. After narrowing down the colleges that offered the necessary degrees, Susana assisted Giselle with several potential scholarships and application forms. Susana explained that all of Giselle’s academic and athletic accomplishments can impact the chances of winning scholarships.

Giselle also plans to do her volunteer hours at All Peoples. She met with Jennifer Santos, RSVP Director, who explained the volunteer process and paperwork needed to get started.

Because of Giselle’s raw talent and hard work and with a little direction from a caring College Advisor, Giselle is one step closer to achieving her goals!

If you’re a Parent or Student, we invite you to speak with one of our College Advisors. Please call (213) 747-6357 ext 147 for more info!
